Streaming Showdown: A Comparison of the Most Popular Platforms

Streaming Subscriptions Continue to Rise in Hungary: Netflix Dominates Market

As the number of traditional television subscriptions continues to fall, the demand for streaming services in Hungary is on the rise. With a wide range of choices, countless providers offer an extensive selection of films and series. A recent comparison from World Economy examined the five largest streaming providers in Hungary, including Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, SkyShowtime, and Amazon Prime. The comparison sheds light on the most popular platforms among Hungarians, their pricing, and available content.

Despite facing a growing number of competitors and a shrinking customer base, Netflix maintains its market dominance with over 220 million subscribers worldwide. In Hungary, Netflix remains the top choice for streaming, closely followed by Disney+, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime. The recently introduced platform, SkyShowtime, also stands to gain traction, especially considering Netflix’s notably higher pricing compared to other providers.

The breakdown of Netflix’s subscription prices for 2024 is as follows:
– Basic: HUF 2,490 (EUR 6.60)
– Standard: HUF 3,490 (EUR 9.20)
– Premium: HUF 4,490 (EUR 11.90)

While Netflix no longer offers a free trial, subscribers have the flexibility to cancel or suspend their subscriptions at any time. Disney+ recently raised its monthly subscription fee to HUF 3,090 (EUR 8.20), offering access to a vast array of shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.

Amazon Prime Video stands out for offering a significant catalog of films and series at a monthly price of HUF 899 (EUR 2.40). Subscribers can also enjoy a 30-day free trial and simultaneous streaming on three devices. Notably, Amazon Prime Video will introduce advertising in several countries, following the example set by Disney+, Max, and Netflix.

The newly launched SkyShowtime allows access to Paramount Plus, Sky, Showtime, NBC, CBS, and Comedy Central content for HUF 1,990 (EUR 5.30) per month. In addition to international content, SkyShowtime also offers Hungarian programming.

HBO Max offers access to the largest original catalog, with subscribers able to watch on three devices simultaneously at a monthly cost of HUF 2,390 (EUR 6.30). Furthermore, all Warner Bros. films are available on the platform just a few weeks after their theatrical release.

The comparison also highlights additional streaming providers such as Filmio, Film Club, Cinego, and RTL+, each offering various content and subscription prices.

With Netflix leading the streaming market in Hungary, followed by HBO Max and Disney+, data from the National Media and Infocommunications Authority indicates that Disney+ and Netflix are particularly popular among individuals under 30. Moreover, a notable trend shows that a significantly higher number of viewers watch content on mobile or tablet devices compared to desktop or laptop viewing.

As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, the shift away from traditional television subscriptions in favor of streaming services appears to be an enduring trend in Hungary.
