Stunning Renovation Feature Unveiled in Buda Castle District

The reconstruction of the dome of the former Defense Headquarters in Budapest has been completed, marking a significant milestone in the restoration of this historic building. The dome, one of the most spectacular elements of the structure, has been unveiled to visitors after eight decades.

Standing at 15 meters high and nine meters wide, the roof ornament now adorns the building in its final form, reaching more than 50 meters above Dísz Square. The decorative galvanized sheet metal covering of the dome’s roof ornament is now visible, along with the lantern and top ornament that enhance the dome’s appearance. Additionally, the four griffin birds that symbolically guard the building have been returned to their original positions.

One unique feature of the dome is the diagonal pattern of glass that covers the surfaces between the supporting arches, giving it a stunning appearance and providing visitors with an unrivaled panoramic view from the platform inside the dome.

Designed by Mór Kallina in the late 19th century, the building faced extensive damage during World War II. Despite surviving the battles, the communist authorities chose to partially demolish the building up to the first floor for ideological reasons. As part of the National Hauszmann Program, the restored Defense Headquarters will soon be open to the public and will house the Military History Institute and Museum.

The National Hauszmann Program is a ten-year initiative aimed at revitalizing the Buda Castle District. The first phase of the program focused on restoring public spaces, parks, castle gardens, and historical buildings. As reported by Hungary Today, Archduke Joseph’s Palace, previously in ruins, has been restored to its original height, with finishing touches being applied by workers.

With the completion of the dome reconstruction, visitors can now witness the grandeur of this historical landmark in Budapest. The restoration not only preserves the architectural heritage of the building but also offers a unique experience for those exploring the city’s rich history.
