Historical Artifact Operation Leads to Seizure of Weapons and Coins in Turkey
The Balıkesir Provincial Police Department, along with the Balıkesir Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Branch (KOM) and Edremit District Police Department Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Bureau teams, recently conducted an operation against a person’s residence and annexes based on intelligence information. During the search, the teams discovered an astonishing number of historical artifacts and weaponry.
The search led to the seizure of 103 rifles, 13 pistols, 10 semi-automatic rifles called Mausers, and a variety of other weapons consisting of swords, bayonets, and wedges. In addition to the weapons, the operation also resulted in the seizure of 1,402 coins, 21 different books, 2 binoculars, and more than 60 swords, wedges, and bayonets. Furthermore, the operation also resulted in the seizure of 89 money or valuable papers, 1 compass, and a pair of staghorns.
A total of 38 cartridges of 6.5×54 labeled Mauser shells were also found in the operation, along with 19 unmarked Mauser shells, 1 unmarked bullet, 12 unmarked cores, and 22 22 caliber bullets. The search also led to the discovery of 24 shackles clock, 2 metal belts and their 4 pieces, 5 coins of different sizes and sizes, rope and chain necklaces with seals, 48 different sizes of Arabic and Ottoman written seals, 10 necklaces, belts, bracelets, plates, tongs, a seal and brooch written in Arabic and Ottoman, 1 seal with the inscription of TR Ankara Ulus Primary School Directorate, 4 sleeves, 5 coins attached to a wire, 4 figures and 1 colored beads, and 2 trays.
The arrested suspect’s proceedings are continuing, and it is believed that the items seized during the operation are worth millions of dollars. The operation is part of the Turkish government’s efforts to combat smuggling and protect the country’s historical artifacts and cultural heritage.
