President Tatar Proposes New Solution for Cyprus Issue
President Ersin Tatar recently met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York to discuss the ongoing Cyprus issue. In his statement after the meeting, President Tatar expressed his gratitude to Secretary-General Guterres for his leadership in addressing global challenges.
During the meeting, President Tatar reiterated the Turkish Cypriot side’s stance on the Cyprus problem. He emphasized the need for recognition of the natural rights of Turkish Cypriots, including sovereign equality and equal international status, as a prerequisite for initiating new negotiations for a lasting solution. President Tatar highlighted the failures of past federal-based negotiations and proposed a new approach that focuses on establishing good neighborly relations between two separate states on the island.
President Tatar emphasized the importance of cooperation, diplomacy, and dialogue based on equality to achieve a sustainable solution. He discussed the possibility of future steps with the Secretary-General, aiming to address the obstructive policies that have eroded trust between the two parties.
Furthermore, President Tatar criticized the Greek Cypriot leadership for its oppressive behavior towards Turkish Cypriots, including targeting investors and hindering tourism. He also thanked President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for advocating for the rights of Turkish Cypriots at the UN General Assembly and called for the end of the unjust isolation imposed on Turkish Cypriots.
President Tatar’s efforts are geared towards securing basic human rights for Turkish Cypriots and creating a hopeful future for the youth on the island. His determination to find a fair and inclusive solution to the Cyprus issue reflects his commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of the Turkish Cypriot people.
