Sudan’s Descent into Chaos Continues, Says UN

Developments in Sudan were recently discussed at the United Nations (UN) Security Council (UNSC), where alarming reports of escalating violence and humanitarian crisis were shared.

According to Edem Wosornu, Director of the Operations and Defense Unit of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Sudan is descending into chaos, with the situation becoming increasingly dire, especially in the Al Fashir region. Wosornu highlighted that the lives of 800 thousand people are at risk in El Fashir, where violence continues to escalate without any restrictions.

Furthermore, Wosornu warned that Sudan is on the brink of famine, with approximately 5 million people facing urgent food insecurity. He emphasized that if urgent action is not taken, 2 million people in 41 different conflict areas across the country will face hunger, leading to devastating consequences, especially for women and children.

Despite efforts by the UN, member states, and regional organizations, the conflict in Sudan persists, with Martha Pobee, UN Deputy Secretary-General for Africa, expressing concern over the situation. Pobee stressed the need for urgent action to prevent further ethnic conflict and division in Sudan, highlighting the importance of holding responsible parties accountable for crimes committed.

In light of the escalating crisis, the UN has called for the protection of civilians and infrastructure, ensuring unhindered humanitarian aid access, and increasing funding for aid operations. Ultimately, the key goal is to put an end to the conflict in Sudan and pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region.
