Among the 21 provinces in Mongolia, eastern Sukhbaatar has been hit the hardest, with over 1.1 million livestock deaths reported by the State Emergency Commission. This severe cold weather has been accompanied by higher than usual snowfall, with approximately 80 percent of the country’s territory covered in snow.
At the end of 2023, Mongolia had a total of 64.7 million livestock, as reported by the National Statistics Office. The impact of the extreme weather conditions on the country’s economy and agriculture sector is significant, with many herders facing devastating losses.
In response to the emergency situation, the State Emergency Commission has received donations totaling 3.1 billion MNT in cash from 45 citizens, 26 enterprises, 61 government organizations, and 26 non-governmental organizations. Additionally, donations in the form of inventories valued at over 700 thousand MNT have been received from one citizen, nine enterprises, and seven non-governmental organizations.
The government and various organizations are working together to provide support to affected herders and mitigate the impact of the extreme weather conditions on Mongolia’s livestock and agriculture sector. The situation remains critical, and further assistance and resources are needed to address the ongoing emergency.
