Summer University Launches at Prestigious Budapest University

The 27th Hungarian Summer University in the Carpathian Basin and the Forum for Hungarian Institutions of the Hungarian diaspora in the Carpathian Basin has officially opened at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, welcoming Hungarian-speaking university and college students from across the border. The summer university offers courses in various fields including political and legal sciences, natural sciences, humanities, IT, and teacher training, which will run until July 15.

ELTE’s rector, László Borhy, expressed his delight at the growing success of the summer university, with approximately 150 students joining from regions such as Transylvania, Upper Hungary in Slovakia, Transcarpathia, and Vojvodina. This year’s courses will focus on artificial intelligence as part of an interdisciplinary section.

Veronika Varga-Bajusz, the state secretary for higher education, vocational, and adult training at the ministry of culture and innovation, highlighted the positive developments in Hungarian higher education. She noted a significant increase in the number of students from disadvantaged areas, as well as the improvement in competitiveness and accessibility of Hungarian universities. Varga-Bajusz also mentioned that 12 Hungarian universities are now in the top 5 percent in world rankings, with 3 in the top 2 percent and one in the top 1 percent. Additionally, higher-education funding has doubled compared to 2020.
