Sunflowers Being Harvested in the Muş Plain

Sunflower Harvest Begins in Muş Plain

The harvest of sunflowers in the Muş Plain has officially begun, with sunflowers being cultivated on an impressive 54 thousand decares of land in the region.

To celebrate the start of the harvest, a special ceremony was organized by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry at the Yıldız Alparslan Agricultural Enterprise. The motto for the event was “It’s Abundant Harvest Time and If the Farmer Smiles, the Country Smiles”. During the ceremony, Muş Governor Avni Çakır reflected on the successful season they had just completed. He highlighted the continuous progress being made in agriculture each year, attributing this growth to the state’s investments and support of agricultural initiatives. Çakır also mentioned that the production of sunflowers for oil and nuts contributes around 400 million lira to the economy annually.

“We are talking about a turnover of 400 million lira in sunflowers alone. I hope Muş will be among the star cities of agriculture in the future,” Çakır expressed. “We are currently only utilizing half of our capacity. We are working to broaden our product range in the region.”

Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Mehmet Gün, provided more insight into the scale of sunflower cultivation in the area. Last year, 22 thousand decares of oil sunflower and 13 thousand 500 decares of confectionery sunflower were planted, yielding an average of 212 kilograms per decare. This year, with increased support and planned production, Gün expects even higher yields. “This year, 14 thousand decares of oil sunflower and 40 thousand decares of confectionery sunflower were planted. We achieved a yield of 252 kilograms per decare,” Gün explained.

As the sunflower harvest continues in Muş Plain, the region looks forward to further growth and success in agricultural production.
