Support for Palestine Grows Across UK Universities
Students from several universities in different parts of England have joined the global movement in support of Palestine by setting up camps on their campuses and calling for action from their institutions.
Groups like “Newcastle Apartheid off Campus” at Newcastle University, Bristol University students, and Sheffield Campus Coalition for Palestine (SCCP) at Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University have all organized protests and camped out to show solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The protesters are demanding that their universities cut ties with companies supplying weapons to Israel and openly show support for Palestine by ending cooperation with Israeli institutions. They are also calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and protection for students and staff who speak out in support of Palestine.
The demonstrations are not limited to the UK, as similar protests have erupted at Columbia University in the US. Pro-Palestinian students at Columbia have staged a sit-in to protest the school’s financial investments in companies supporting Israel’s actions in Gaza. The protests have led to multiple arrests, sparking a broader discussion about freedom of expression on US campuses.
Across the US, student protests in support of Palestine have spread to more than 50 universities, with over 1000 students and faculty members being detained by police in the last two weeks. The movement shows no signs of slowing down as students continue to demand justice for the Palestinian people.
