Supporting Humanitarian Programs for Sahel Region Security
The Sahel region in Africa is facing significant challenges, as highlighted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade during a recent press conference in Budapest with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Mali. Péter Szijjártó emphasized the importance of the relationship with Africa, especially in dealing with security issues that affect both regions.
The Minister acknowledged the interdependence between Europe and the Sahel region, noting that the ongoing war in Ukraine presents serious challenges for both regions. He also highlighted the daily struggles faced by the people in the Sahel region, including energy prices, inflation, and food supply challenges.
One of the major concerns raised was the increasing threat of terrorism in the Sahel, which requires a united international coalition to effectively combat. Hungary has expressed its commitment to supporting the countries in the Sahel region in countering the threat of terrorism.
In light of these challenges, Hungary has been involved in humanitarian efforts in the region through the Hungary Helps Program, providing support for various projects to improve the lives of people in Mali. The government has allocated nearly HUF 40 million (EUR 101,000) towards humanitarian programs in the past years and intends to continue this support in the future.
The Minister emphasized the importance of mutual respect and bilateral cooperation between Hungary and Mali, emphasizing the principle of providing help where it is needed the most. Hungary’s policy towards the Sahel region is focused on offering assistance and support to address the issues faced by the local population.
