New Cold Storage Integrated Facilities to Boost Citrus Industry in Guzelyurt
An information meeting was recently held regarding the “Guzelyurt Cold Storage Integrated Facilities”, which is set to be a significant investment for the citrus industry. The event saw the participation of key figures including Vice President of the Republic of Turkey Cevdet Yılmaz, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, TR Nicosia Ambassador Metin Feyzioğlu, and other ministers on an official visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
During the meeting, Vice President Yılmaz announced the forthcoming launch of a new financial cooperation program, with plans to finalize the necessary agreements without delay. Emphasizing their commitment to supporting vital sectors in Northern Cyprus, Yılmaz highlighted the project’s focus on utilizing environmentally friendly and renewable resources in line with global trends.
The event featured a briefing by Haluk Altuntaş, Construction Application Manager of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, before proceeding to the information session. Prime Minister Üstel, Ambassador Feyzioğlu, ministers, MPs, mayors, officials, and citizens were also in attendance.
In his address, Prime Minister Üstel lauded the historic significance of the day and underscored the government’s efforts to prioritize unfinished projects in Guzelyurt. He highlighted completed initiatives such as the Güzelyurt-Lefke main road and announced plans to commence construction on the cold storage facilities, set to be completed within 40 weeks of groundbreaking.
Furthermore, Üstel revealed that the cold storage’s capacity would eventually be boosted from 15,000 to 40,000 tons, marking a major development for the region’s citrus growers. He also emphasized the project’s sustainability, with the facility generating its own energy and significantly increasing fruit processing capabilities.
Vice President Yılmaz commended the ongoing collaboration projects with Turkish Cypriots, particularly in the citrus sector, where a modernized concentrate facility and expanded storage capacity are set to benefit producers across Cyprus. The facility’s design prioritizes self-sufficiency through solar energy utilization, aligning with global trends towards eco-friendly practices.
The project aims to address longstanding storage deficiencies in the agricultural sector, strengthening planned agriculture and production practices. Yılmaz emphasized a continuous dialogue between Turkish and Cypriot agricultural ministries, underscoring Turkey’s support for Northern Cyprus’ progress and prosperity.
The developments at the meeting reinforce the commitment to fostering economic growth and sustainability in Guzelyurt and Northern Cyprus at large. With further projects in the pipeline, including the Güzelyurt Hospital construction, the region looks poised for a new era of development and prosperity.
