Surprised by His Final Wish: ‘Let it be Placed on My Grave’
Dursun Hakkı Sofuoğlu, a retired truck driver from the Aksu neighborhood of Sürmene district, has a special bond with his 1954 model Willys pickup truck that has lasted for 50 years. Despite numerous offers to sell his classic vehicle, Sofuoğlu remains steadfast in his decision to keep it by his side until the end.
Having traveled to various countries during his trucking days, Sofuoğlu has now settled down in his hometown after the passing of his wife. His only companion is his trusted pickup truck, which he drives to the city center twice a week, and occasionally up to the plateau for a change of scenery.
Last year, when the new Zigana Tunnel was constructed, Sofuoğlu took his vintage pickup for a ride through the tunnel to experience the new route. The 93-year-old man takes pride in maintaining his truck in top condition, even changing the engine himself when he first acquired it.
In his will, Sofuoğlu has specified that he wants to be laid to rest next to his wife, with his beloved pickup truck placed beside his grave. Despite many admirers and offers to buy his treasured vehicle, Sofuoğlu remains firm in his decision to keep it close even after he is gone.
The veteran truck driver, who spent his life on the roads, cherishes the memories and experiences he shared with his pickup truck over the years. His determination to keep the vehicle by his side until the end reflects the deep connection he has with his faithful companion.
