Survey Shows Majority of Young People Plan to Own a Home in the Future

Survey Shows High Aspiration for Home Ownership Among Hungarian Youth

A recent survey by the Youth Research Institute has revealed that the overwhelming majority of 15-39 year old Hungarians, 86%, consider it important to own their own house or apartment as an adult. The study highlights the significance of education in shaping these views, with 93% of those with a higher education considering property ownership the most important thing.

The research also indicates that young people who already own their own property are more likely to have received tertiary education, and interestingly, women tend to own a larger proportion of flats or houses than men.

Surprisingly, the survey found that relatively more people in smaller settlements own their own home. It also showed that a significant majority, 71%, of young people who do not yet own their own home are likely to be living in their own home by 2050, with the largest proportion expecting to own a home by that time being in the north of the country.

When asked how long they estimate it will take to get their own property, around half of young people thought it was realistic for them within ten years, with a high proportion, 18%, unable to say at the moment. Furthermore, the majority of 15-39 year old Hungarians, 66%, do not own their own property but aspire to, and are only moderately frustrated by the current situation and their future aspirations.

However, only two to three percent of respondents feel that the most pressing problem facing young people in Hungary today is access to housing. The survey indicates that uncertainty and lack of financial difficulties are viewed as more significant issues for the youth in Hungary. The data was collected from a national, representative sample of 1,000 Hungarian citizens aged 15-39 years, interviewed face-to-face, in late 2022 – early 2023.

Overall, the survey illuminates the aspirations of Hungarian youth for property ownership and provides insights into their views on housing.
