Surviving a Deadly Snake Bite While Drinking Water

Kamil Gündoğdu, a shepherd living in the Çiğdemli village of the Divriği district of Sivas, recently had a terrifying encounter with a viper, one of the most venomous snakes in the world. While grazing his goats, Gündoğdu became thirsty and went to a fountain to drink water. It was at this moment that the viper attacked him, biting him on the arm.

Immediately rushed to Divriği Hospital, Gündoğdu’s arm began to swell, prompting a transfer to Sivas Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. After undergoing two surgeries to open up a large part of his arm to relax the veins, Gündoğdu managed to survive thanks to intensive treatment.

Speaking on the matter, Prof. Dr. Zekeriya Öztemür, an academic member of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department, explained that Gündoğdu was conscious upon arrival at the hospital, but his arm was severely swollen due to the viper bite. Antidotes were administered to help with the swelling, and further surgeries were required to improve blood circulation.

Gündoğdu himself recounted the experience, stating that he immediately tied his arm with a rope as a first aid measure after being bitten by the snake. Despite the initial fear and swelling on his arm, Gündoğdu is now feeling much better after two weeks of treatment.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by venomous snakes in the region, with Öztemür emphasizing the importance of seeking medical help promptly in such situations. Gündoğdu’s story is a testament to the importance of quick thinking and effective medical intervention in cases of snake bites, ultimately leading to a positive outcome in his recovery.
