Sweden Approves Flash Decision Law for Terrorist Organizations

Sweden Approves Stricter Counter-Terrorism Measures for NATO Membership

The Swedish parliament has approved a new draft penal code aimed at fighting terrorism in response to a request from Turkey to take stricter counter-terrorism measures for NATO membership. The new law, which will come into effect on June 1, will impose a maximum sentence of 4 years for those who encourage, strengthen or support the activities of terrorist organizations. In case of aggravating circumstances, it will impose a minimum of 2, and a maximum of 8 years.

The draft law passed with 268 votes in favor, 34 against, and 47 deputies who did not participate in the voting. The legislation also expands the authorities’ powers to detain and prosecute those who finance or support terrorist organizations.

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billström recently made statements that seemed like confessions to the Turkish press, saying that the terrorist group PKK is using Sweden as a base. Turkey has been critical of Sweden’s stance towards the PKK and has insisted on stricter counter-terrorism measures as a condition for NATO membership.

In another incident, a research rocket launched from Sweden’s Esrange space center malfunctioned and fell on Norwegian soil, causing anger in Norway. Sweden has apologized for the incident and has vowed to take measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
