In a recent conversation with The Astana Times, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan Salman Bal highlighted the longstanding partnership between the two countries and the promising opportunities that lie ahead. As Kazakhstan and Switzerland mark 32 years of diplomatic relations in June, Ambassador Bal shared insights into the close ties between the nations.

“We have very good relations with Kazakhstan, and I am confident that they will continue to strengthen in the future. There is a significant potential for further cooperation and collaboration between our countries,” said Ambassador Bal, who assumed his position in Kazakhstan in September 2023.

The ambassador pointed out various high-level visits and exchanges between the two countries in recent years, emphasizing the importance of these interactions in enhancing bilateral cooperation. He highlighted the partnership between Kazakhstan and Switzerland on global and regional issues related to disarmament, environment, human rights, and water management.

One notable initiative mentioned by Ambassador Bal is the Blue Peace initiative launched by Switzerland in Central Asia in 2017, aimed at promoting cooperation in the effective management of shared water resources in the region. He also highlighted Switzerland’s readiness to provide expertise and support to Kazakhstan during times of need, such as the recent floods in the north.

Ambassador Bal noted the similarities between Kazakhstan and Switzerland, citing shared characteristics like being landlocked, multicultural, and historically influenced by powerful neighbors. He emphasized the importance of wise foreign and domestic policies, good governance, and respect for human rights in fostering success and development in both nations.

Discussing economic relations, the ambassador highlighted the growing trade ties between Kazakhstan and Switzerland, with Switzerland ranking as the country’s third-largest foreign investor. He mentioned the role of Swiss investments in various sectors in Kazakhstan, including mining, manufacturing, transport, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and food industries. Ambassador Bal also highlighted the promising collaboration between Swiss and Kazakh companies in the transport sector, particularly in the railway industry.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Bal outlined his priorities, including attracting more Swiss businesses and investments to Kazakhstan, promoting science and water diplomacy, and fostering cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries. He expressed optimism about the potential for closer cooperation in various fields and the positive impact it could have on strengthening ties between Kazakhstan and Switzerland.

As he continues his diplomatic mission in Kazakhstan, Ambassador Bal remains committed to furthering the partnership between the two countries and building bridges for increased cooperation and mutual benefit.
