Swiss Firms Rank Among World’s Top Seven Investors
Hungary and Switzerland Unite for Diplomatic Efforts and Economic Cooperation
Bern, Switzerland – In a significant meeting on Monday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis emphasized the critical need for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Noting that no military solution is feasible, Szijjártó reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to support peace talks.
During their discussions, Szijjártó and Cassis acknowledged a shared perspective on many pressing issues facing Europe and beyond. "We stand firmly for peace, take decisive action against illegal migration, and ground our political strategy in common sense," Szijjártó stated, highlighting the alignment of their countries’ approaches.
A key point of their conversation revolved around the concern over the politicization of international organizations, which Szijjártó argued undermines global peace efforts. He asserted, "In large international organizations, it must be possible for countries that disagree or are hostile to each other to discuss their problems and concerns." Politicizing these platforms jeopardizes the opportunity for dialogue and, consequently, the pursuit of peace.
On the economic front, the ministers noted that the strong political cooperation between Hungary and Switzerland has paved the way for increased economic collaboration. Over the last decade, Swiss investment in Hungary has tripled, with Hungary attracting 44 major Swiss corporate investments valued at approximately 600 billion forints (1.48 billion euros). Szijjártó remarked, "Swiss companies now represent the seventh largest investor community in Hungary."
Tourism also showcased the strengthening ties between the two nations, with a reported 80 percent increase in Hungarians traveling to Switzerland over the past year, while Swiss tourists visiting Hungary rose by about 20 percent. Szijjártó concluded by emphasizing the importance of not only political and economic relations but also personal connections in fostering robust cooperation.
This meeting underscores the proactive stance of Hungary and Switzerland in addressing both peace and prosperity, setting an example of collaboration amid global challenges.
