Syria Reopens Path to OIC Membership

Turkey successfully facilitates the return of Syria to OIC membership

Turkey is making strides to reclaim its well-deserved place on both regional and international platforms. In a recent development, Turkey played a pivotal role in the reinstatement of Syria’s OIC membership.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan actively participated in the agenda of the Extraordinary Foreign Ministers Council Meeting in Jeddah on March 7, 2025. Through Turkey’s initiatives, the process of reviving Syria’s OIC membership was set in motion.

During the meeting, a draft decision proposed by Turkey gained traction, leading to the lifting of Syria’s suspension from the OIC after nearly 13 years.

The Foreign Minister of the new administration in Syria was subsequently invited to the meeting and took his seat at the country’s table as the representative of Syria. This move marks a significant milestone, especially considering the decision to suspend Syria’s membership was made during the 4th Extraordinary OIC Summit in Mecca back in August 2012.

The discussions at the Extraordinary Executive Committee of Ministers in Jeddah also addressed the situation in Syria, particularly in light of the escalating violence perpetrated by the Assad regime against its own citizens.

As Turkey continues to play a leading role in regional diplomacy, this recent development underscores the country’s commitment to fostering peace, stability, and dialogue within the region.

In related news, President Erdoğan has also issued a call to the European Union, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and mutual understanding in addressing key regional issues.
