Syrian Defense Ministry Blocks Russian Convoy from Entering Tartus Base
A Russian convoy, consisting of 30 vehicles with rockets, recently departed from Himeymim Air Base and set out for Tartus. The convoy was stopped by military forces from the new government’s Ministry of Defense at a road checkpoint in Tartus for 8 hours.
The convoy eventually returned to the Himeymim base in Ceble district around 17.00 local time after waiting for hours at the checkpoint. This incident comes after Russia’s military presence in Latakia, Syria’s Himeymim air base, was attracted by an operation initiated by the opposition on December 27, 2024.
The Russian army began using the base following an agreement reached in August 2015 with the overthrown Assad regime. A year later, the base began to expand. The situation surrounding the convoy’s journey to Tartus and the military presence in Himeymim continues to be monitored closely.
