Taiwan Experiences Scorching Heatwave, Health Concerns Rise
Taiwan, located in the Far East, is currently enduring the hottest days of the year as temperatures soar to unprecedented levels. The country’s Bureau of Meteorology (CWB) has issued orange and yellow alerts in response to the mercury spiking above 38 degrees Celsius in 17 counties and cities. Moreover, the CWB has predicted that temperatures may reach a scorching 40 degrees in areas north of Taoyuan city.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Health has revealed that the recent blistering weather has resulted in 160 hospitalizations, all attributed to heat-related ailments. Officials highlight that this surge of medical cases is the first of its kind since 2019, emphasizing the severity of the current heatwave.
As a result of the extreme conditions, the Bureau of Meteorology in Taiwan has issued public advisories promoting measures to stay safe. The public is urged to drink ample amounts of water, apply sunscreen, and wear protective clothing. Moreover, specific demographic groups including the elderly, heart patients, and children have been cautioned against venturing outdoors during the midday hours when heat is at its peak.
In Taipei, the nation’s capital, a historic temperature record was shattered on July 24, 2020, with the air temperature reaching a staggering 39.7 degrees. This previously unseen level of heat underscores the seriousness of the current heatwave crisis.
With the heatwave persisting, it is crucial for the authorities and the public to remain alert and proactive in taking preventive measures to combat the scorching conditions.
