Tata’s State-of-the-art Fleet Enhanced with Two New Leopard 2A7HU Tanks

Hungary continues to strengthen its military capabilities with the recent arrival of two Leopard 2A7HU tanks, bringing the total number of these modern combat vehicles in the country to more than half of the ordered quantity. Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasized the significance of this delivery, highlighting that the last batch of tanks arrived on September 20.

The 11th Tank Battalion of the Tata Armored Brigade of the Hungarian Defense Forces will now be equipped with 24 new Leopard 2A7HU tanks, marking a significant step in the rearmament process. Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky noted that the unit’s transition from the older T-72 tanks to the new technology is progressing smoothly, thanks to the arrival of the new equipment and comprehensive training provided both in Hungary and Germany.

Looking ahead, the Defense Minister outlined the timeline for completing the armored force’s renewal by 2028, which will include a total of 44 Leopard 2A7HU tanks, 5 Wisent 2HU tractors, and 3 Leguan 2HU bridge launchers. He underscored the Hungarian government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s defense capabilities, with a focus on meeting NATO’s expectation of 2% of GDP allocated for defense spending in 2024.

The recent training exercise of Leopard 2A7HU tanks in Hungary showcased the operators’ proficiency in handling the new equipment, particularly during system adjustment firing at the shooting range in Szomód. Major Norbert Nagy, deputy commander of the tank battalion, highlighted the successful execution of the three-day event, which tested the operators’ accuracy and skill in hitting targets.

Overall, Hungary’s investment in modernizing its armed forces and acquiring state-of-the-art military equipment reflects a strategic approach to enhancing national defense capabilities and ensuring readiness for future challenges. The ongoing collaboration with international partners and commitment to meeting defense spending targets underscore Hungary’s dedication to strengthening its military preparedness.
