TDP Urges Parliament to Pass Domestic Violence Law Immediately

The Chairman of the Socialist Democracy Party (TDP), Mine Atlı, has called out the Iskele Police Department for its lack of action in cases of violence against women. Atlı stated that the department has been referred to as “the police station that does nothing in cases of violence against women” and even “the police station that protects violent men.” She urged the General Directorate of Police to address this issue and called on government and opposition MPs in the Parliament to take action to pass the Domestic Violence Law as soon as possible.
In a written statement, Atlı referred to a recent incident where a victim of violence in Iskele was subjected to abuse by her husband, with whom she was in the process of divorcing. She shared her experience on social media, which was also covered by the press, and claimed that the Iskele Police Department had been indifferent to her plight. Atlı directly addressed General Manager Kasım Kuni and questioned the department’s response to such incidents.
Atlı emphasized the need for the police to take proper action against women victims of violence and to hold perpetrators of violence accountable. She called for the implementation of standards regarding the attitude of police stations towards violence against women, as outlined in the Domestic Violence Law.
The TDP Chairman also highlighted the prevalence of violence against women in Northern Cyprus, which she believes has been overlooked. She pointed to the complaints received by social services and the police to support her argument and called on the police, the government, and the opposition to take a stand against this issue.
Atlı concluded by stressing the importance of implementing standards for handling violence against women at police stations, regardless of which officer is on duty. She urged the chiefs of relevant police departments and the director of the General Directorate of Police to take action and uphold these standards.
