
Teacher Unions Rally with 40 Organizations at Nicosia Martyrs Monument

Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union (KTÖS) and Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS) Mobilize in Protest
In a powerful show of solidarity, around 40 organizations supporting the Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union (KTÖS) and the Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS) gathered in Citroen Lights in Dereboyu to protest against threats to secular education and societal structure. The protesters marched in front of the monument of martyrs, holding banners and chanting slogans.
The demonstration, which took place along routes including Citroen Lights, Ledra Palace Lights, Presidential, Kuğulu Park, and Parliament, aimed to draw attention to the dangers facing the current education system and the society as a whole.
Various union presidents and representatives, along with members of the community, showed their support to the cause by participating in the action in front of the Martyrs’ Monument. Selma Eylem, President of KTOEÖS, Mustafa Baybora, President of KTÖS, as well as other union leaders and activists, addressed the crowd and highlighted the importance of protecting the values of a secular society.
The protesters expressed their concerns about recent decisions made by the Council of Ministers, which they believe pose a threat to the principles of democracy and secularism. They called for the resignation of officials responsible for these decisions and emphasized the need to uphold the constitution and laws that protect the rights of children and ensure a bright future for all.
Speaking at the event, Mustafa Baybora criticized the government for its policies that undermine freedom of thought and expression. He reiterated the importance of defending secularism and preserving the legacy of Atatürk in the Turkish Cypriot society.
Other union leaders, including Bengihan from KTAMS and KEFF, and Ahmet Serdaroğlu from Hür-İş, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need to protect the identity and culture of the Turkish Cypriot community.
The demonstration concluded with a performance by the music group Sol Key, leaving a powerful message of unity and determination among the participants. The event served as a reminder that the Turkish Cypriot community stands together in the face of challenges to its core values and beliefs.
