Teen Bride and Sister-in-Law Become Unlikely Business Partners

Semire Sönmez and Esra Sönmez, residents of the Akevler District of Antakya, have been living and working together as sisters-in-law for 16 years. Their lives took a turn after the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş, which destroyed their workplaces. Determined to find a way to continue earning a living, the two women decided to open a kebab shop together.
Prior to the earthquake, Semire and Esra had been making tandoori bread together for four years. However, in order to adapt to the new circumstances post-earthquake, they taught themselves how to make kebabs. After a period of learning, they successfully opened their kebab shop and have been running it for 1.5 years.
Esra Sönmez shared, “After the earthquake, we share our earnings together by working in the kebab store we run with my sister-in-law.” Describing their relationship as very good, she emphasized the importance of mutual respect and understanding in their partnership. Despite not having any prior experience in kebab making, they have managed to create a successful business and maintain a harmonious working relationship.
Semire Sönmez also expressed her satisfaction with working alongside her aunt, stating, “It is a very nice situation to work with my aunt. We work together and try to stay afloat. We all contribute to running this place, taking turns to man the barbecue.”
The resilient partnership between these two women serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and determination in overcoming challenges. Despite the hardships they have faced, Semire and Esra continue to thrive in their kebab business, showcasing their strength and unity.
