Tension Declines in Cyprus Talks: Negotiations for the Island’s Future Negotiate
Cyprus has been the scene of various crises and wars many times throughout its history. However, a positive development has been recorded in the negotiations for the future of the island in recent years. The tension between the two sides is decreasing and promising steps are being taken to conclude the negotiations.
Many topics are covered, from setting the red lines between the two sides to reconciliation. The Turkish side insists on issues related to the political equality and security of the island. The Greek side, on the other hand, continues to insist that the island remain as a united state. However, in the last negotiations, these differences of opinion have begun to be overcome.
At the meeting held in Geneva at the end of last year at the call of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, intense efforts were made to resolve the differences of opinion between the two sides. Following these meetings, the President of the TRNC Ersin Tatar and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis came together in February. During the negotiations, a common text was worked on and it was aimed for the parties to agree on this text.
Negotiations initiated for the resolution of the Cyprus crisis may result in a reconciliation of the parties. However, for these negotiations to be concluded, the political will must be strong. It is hopeful in this respect that the differences of opinion between the two sides have started to decrease and the parties have shown a rapprochement.
Negotiations for the future of the island of Cyprus are not just an issue between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. At the same time, it is a subject that Turkey is also very interested in. Turkey has always displayed a positive attitude towards the resolution of the Cyprus crisis and supported the parties throughout the negotiations.
The resolution of the Cyprus crisis is extremely important for the island to have a peaceful and stable future. For this reason, the work should be accelerated in order to eliminate the differences of opinion between the parties and the unification of the island should be ensured by completing the negotiations. In this process, the parties need to understand each other, demonstrate their political will and struggle to find a peaceful solution.
