The Closing Circle of Light: Illuminating the World
The fourth candle of the Advent wreath, representing love and commemorating St. John the Baptist, is being lit today. This tradition sees Catholics lighting a purple candle and Protestants a red one on this day, marking the ongoing anticipation of the Advent season.
In the liturgical calendar, purple is the predominant color of Advent, with an exception made for the third Sunday where pink is allowed. The term “Advent” is derived from the Latin “adventus Domini,” meaning the coming of the Lord.
Initially, only one Advent Sunday was observed, but in the 7th century, Pope Gregory the Great set the number at four. Later in 1570, Pope Pius V made the Advent season obligatory in the Catholic Church. In the past, Advent was marked by midnight bell ringings, strict fasting, and early morning masses known as “Rorate.”
The prominent symbol of Advent, the Advent wreath, is traditionally made of fir branches and has one of the four candles lit each Sunday. This custom gained popularity in the 19th century, with its origins tracing back to ancient pagan traditions. The symbolism of the four candles includes the spreading of light through Jesus’ birth, as well as representing faith, hope, love, and joy.
Advent wreaths are typically blessed in churches on the first Sunday of Advent or during the Saturday evening mass before. The Advent season also incorporates various folk customs and beliefs, like the Advent calendar and regional traditions associated with St. Barbara’s Day and Lucia Day.
As the Advent season progresses, the final Sunday sees all four candles on the wreath illuminated, symbolizing the culmination of light that goes beyond itself, representing the divine Son of God.
This significant time also highlights the roles of St. John the Baptist and Jesus in the journey towards peace, love, and salvation.
