The Crisis of Christian Democracy: Lost Identity and Compass

Christian Democratic politician, Lőrinc Nacsa, recently spoke at a conference in Budapest about the “strange form of apostasy” that Europe is practicing by increasingly denying universal values. During the conference, organized by the Christian Democratic Institute and the St. Stephen’s Institute, Nacsa said that Europe is calling itself a “community of values” but is moving away from the Christianity that once gave it a solid foundation. In recent decades, left-liberal politics has become the intellectual mainstream, and in many places, churches have conformed to a canon of liberal politics. Nacsa emphasized that the crisis of Christian democracy in Western Europe is that it has abandoned its main goal to represent Christian values in politics. During the conference, Greek Catholic Bishop Fülöp Kocsis also said it is essential for Christian communities to remain vibrant and contemplate on how to combine structural strengthening of Christian communities and inner renewal.
