Living in Cuba: A Turkish Citizen’s Perspective
Cuba is a country that captures the hearts of many tourists with its old buildings and American vehicles. But beyond the tourism attractions, there is a community of Turkish citizens who call Cuba their home. Despite the challenging conditions, Turkish citizens in Cuba continue to work in the health and tourism sectors.
Cem Türk is one of those Turks who found a new life in Cuba. After dealing with healthcare in the country, he decided to settle down and make Cuba his home. Reflecting on his 10 years in the country, Türk shared his thoughts on his journey.
“I never imagined I would stay in Cuba for so long,” Türk said. “But this place has a way of drawing you in. I visited for work initially, but I found myself wondering if I could live here one day. And here I am, 10 years later, running a healthcare business and working in tourism.”
Türk’s story is not uncommon among Turkish citizens in Cuba. While they may be a small community, they rely on each other for support. The Turkish Embassy in Havana also plays a crucial role in assisting citizens with their problems.
Despite the challenges of living in Cuba, Türk emphasized the warmth and hospitality of the Cuban people. “It’s not an easy country, but the people here make it worthwhile. I feel like I belong here now,” Türk said. “It’s a safe and friendly place, much like home.”
Türk’s family has also embraced Cuba, with his Cuban wife and Turkish-Cuban daughter, Andrea Ayşe. Türk’s daughter even made history as the first Cuban citizen registered in the Sivas registry. Despite the language barrier, Türk’s family has found joy in experiencing Turkish culture and nature.
As Turkish citizens continue to live and work in Cuba, stories like Türk’s shed light on the unique experiences and challenges they face in this vibrant Caribbean country.
