The Future of Hungarian Interest in Transylvania Uncertain

RMDSZ to Focus on Interests of Transylvanian Hungarians in 2024
Hunor Kelemen, the leader of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), has stated that the merging of the Romanian national elections will not change the party’s focus on the interests of Transylvanian Hungarians in 2024.
The announcement came after Social Democratic Party Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and Liberal President of the Senate, Nicolae Ciucă, revealed plans for the two governing parties to enter into an electoral alliance or merge and hold the European Parliament and local elections jointly on June 9.
Reacting to this announcement, Kelemen emphasized that the merging of the elections does not change the issue, and the RMDSZ will continue to defend the interests of Hungarians in Transylvania in the future. He stressed the importance of Hungarian candidates succeeding in local elections and maintaining representation to protect the community from extremist elements within Romanian politics.
Kelemen also spoke out against power games in Romanian public life, stating that citizens have not had time to engage in them. He emphasized the party’s focus on local development and the future of the EU over power struggles, highlighting the need for sober and credible voices in public discourse.
The RMDSZ President concluded by reaffirming the party’s commitment to representing the interests of Transylvanian Hungarians and addressing their needs in the upcoming elections.
It is clear that the RMDSZ remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the rights and well-being of the Hungarian community in Romania, despite the changing political landscape.
