However, recent research has uncovered a hidden danger lurking in these devices – the presence of harmful “forever chemicals” known as PFAS in the fluorinated synthetic rubber used in wristbands.

A new study conducted by researchers at the Scripps Research Institute has revealed that fitness wristbands made with fluorinated synthetic rubber contain perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), a member of the PFAS family. PFAS chemicals have been linked to various health risks and concerns, prompting experts to raise alarm about the potential dangers of prolonged exposure to these substances.

PFAS are commonly used in technical products for their water, sweat, and oil-resistant properties, making them ideal for fitness wristbands to enhance durability and prevent contamination. However, the downside is that these chemicals can easily pass through the skin, increasing the risk of exposure to users.

The research team examined 22 smart watches and fitness wristbands from different brands and found that fluoride was present in all 13 fluorinated elastomer wristbands analyzed. Surprisingly, traces of fluoride were also detected in two non-fluorinated elastomer wristbands, with higher levels typically found in the more expensive options.

Chemical analysis revealed that PFHxA was detected in nine out of the 22 wristbands tested, with levels averaging around 800 billion units (ppb) and exceeding 16,000 ppb in some samples. These levels are comparable to those found in cosmetic products, raising concerns about the potential health risks associated with wearing these devices.

The researchers highlighted the need for further studies to understand the long-term effects of PFHxA and other PFAS compounds on human health. They emphasized the importance of considering the material composition of fitness wristbands and recommended opting for lower-cost, silicone-based options to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals.
