The Impact of Devastating Fires on İzmir: Proximity of Flames to Industrial Zone

Forest Fires Ravage Two Districts in İzmir, Turkey

Yesterday, two districts in İzmir were struck by devastating forest fires as hot and windy weather conditions prevailed. The first fire broke out at approximately 13:45 in the Aliağa Çaltıdere District. The Izmir Regional Directorate of Forestry teams, immediately notified of the incident, swiftly initiated firefighting operations from both air and land. As a safety precaution, residents of the neighborhood were evacuated by sea. Unfortunately, due to strong winds, the efforts to extinguish the flames were prolonged. The fire ultimately engulfed and destroyed two houses. By evening, the teams had largely brought the fire under control, but cooling works continued. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, announced at 21:35 through social media that the fire was under control, although a total of 120 hectares of land in Aliağa had been destroyed in the incident.

Shortly after the initial forest fire in Aliağa, another fire erupted in the Oğlayanasi location of the Menderes district. Responding to the situation in Aliağa, teams quickly shifted their focus to Menderes, commencing firefighting efforts from both air and land.

In response to both fires, a substantial deployment of resources was mobilized, including 8 aircraft, 11 helicopters, 52 water tanks, 18 water supply vehicles, 17 construction equipment vehicles, 8 first responders, and 660 personnel. The flames approached the ITOB Organized Industrial Zone, resulting in panic. However, the timely intervention of the teams successfully prevented the fire from reaching the industrial zone.

Unfortunately, four personnel were affected by the fire and required medical attention. Two personnel were discharged following treatment, while one personnel is currently in service. One individual with a serious condition continues to receive treatment in the intensive care unit.

The forest fires also had an impact on air transportation. Due to the close proximity of the burned area to Adnan Menderes Airport, some airline companies were forced to cancel their flights, causing temporary congestion at the airport.

After intense efforts from the firefighting teams, the fire in Menderes was brought under control at approximately 00:25. Tragically, 270 hectares of land were ravaged by the fire. Despite the fires being largely contained in both regions, ongoing cooling efforts are being conducted.

These recent forest fires serve as a stark reminder of the importance of fire prevention measures and the need for constant vigilance in areas prone to such incidents. Authorities continue to monitor and assess the situation to prevent further outbreaks and ensure the safety of residents and their properties.
