Ruang Volcano: A Southern Gem in Indonesia
Ruang, the southernmost stratovolcano of the Sangihe Islands arc in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, is a majestic peak that stands approximately 725 meters (2,379 ft) tall. Its summit boasts a partial lava dome and offers an incredible view of neighboring peaks such as Klabat to the south, Siau to the north, and Ternate to the east.
Over the years, Ruang has seen its fair share of eruptions, with at least 16 recorded since the first one in 1808. One of the most notable eruptions was witnessed by Dr. Adolf Meyer in 1871, who observed a massive explosion that left a lasting impact on the surrounding area.
The area surrounding Ruang is lush with plantations on its slopes. However, a catastrophic event in the past destroyed many of these within minutes. The eruption triggered a tsunami that devastated most of Ruang’s major villages in Tagulandang, located opposite the volcano. Tragically, many residents lost their lives in the disaster, with estimates of the death toll ranging from 300 to 400. The aftermath of the event was heartbreaking, with bodies of the deceased washing ashore on nearby beaches.
Despite its tumultuous past, Ruang Volcano remains a fascinating natural wonder in Indonesia, attracting visitors and scientists alike to marvel at its beauty and learn from its history.
