The Nomadic Life: A Young Kyrgyz Mother’s Yurt Camp on Central Asia’s Highest Peak
At the base of the majestic 7,000-meter Lenin Peak, near the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, a 21-year-old Kyrgyz woman has made her mark by establishing a yurt camp that has captured the hearts of foreign tourists. Gulburak Begmataeva, inspired by the cultural exchange she experienced during her childhood interactions with international visitors, decided to turn her dreams into reality by launching her very own yurt camp.
The camp, set against the stunning backdrop of the towering Lenin Peak, has become a popular destination for travelers seeking a unique and authentic Kyrgyz experience. Visitors are drawn to the traditional yurts, hospitality, and stunning natural beauty that the region has to offer.
However, despite the camp’s success, the closure of the Kyrgyz-Tajik border has posed a significant challenge for Gulburak and other tourism operators in the region. The border closure has severely impacted cross-border tourism, limiting the flow of visitors and hindering the growth of the local tourism industry.
Gulburak, like many others in the region, remains hopeful for the reopening of the Kyrgyz-Tajik border. She believes that the resumption of cross-border travel will not only benefit her yurt camp but also contribute to the economic development of the region as a whole.
