The Singular Hungarian Oscar Winner: Celebrating 130 Years

Celebrating the Legacy of Hungarian Actor Paul Lukas

Today marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of Paul Lukas (Pál Lukács), the only Hungarian actor to have won an Oscar. Born in Budapest in 1894, Lukas had a remarkable career that spanned both the stage and screen.

Lukas began his acting journey in Budapest, where he quickly rose to fame for his performances in heroic roles on stage. In 1927, he caught the eye of Adolph Zukor, the president of Paramount Pictures, and was signed to star in the silent film “The Woman from Moscow.” This marked the beginning of his successful transition to Hollywood.

Despite initial challenges with sound films due to his heavy accent, Lukas persevered and soon became a highly acclaimed actor in the 1930s. He starred in a range of genres, from dramas to romantic comedies, and even worked with legendary directors like Alfred Hitchcock.

However, it was Lukas’ role in the 1943 film “Watch on the Rhine” that truly solidified his place in cinematic history. The film, based on a play by Lillian Hellman, earned Lukas the prestigious Academy Award for Best Actor, as well as the Golden Globe Award and the New York Film Critics Circle Award.

Beyond his acting talents, Lukas was known for his passion for animal rescue and flying. He was also a sports enthusiast and proudly represented Hungary by showing Hungarian athletes around Hollywood during the 1932 Summer Olympics.

In 1960, Lukas was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a testament to his lasting impact on the entertainment industry. He continued to act until his final on-screen appearance in 1970, before passing away in 1971 during a holiday in Tangier, Morocco.

Today, we remember Paul Lukas for his contributions to film and theater, and for being a proud representative of Hungarian talent on the international stage. His legacy lives on through his timeless performances and dedication to his craft.
