The Talk of Hatay: Family Catches 700 Kilos per Season and Sells for 700 Lira per Kilo

Süleyman Taze and his family, residents of Hatay’s Arsuz district, have been making a living by fishing in the rich waters of the Mediterranean and bringing high-vitamin, large-sized shrimps to tables in other regions. In the current season, the family managed to catch a whopping 700 kilograms of ‘jumbo shrimp’ and is selling them for 700 TL per kilogram.

Fishermen in Hatay, particularly in the earthquake-prone region, have eagerly set out to the Mediterranean after the fishing ban was lifted. The Taze family, who have been involved in jumbo shrimp fishing in the Mediterranean for the past 22 years, embark on their daily fishing journey by boat. The women in the family play an integral role in collecting the shrimps from the nets. Süleyman Taze shared, “We wake up around 5 o’clock in the morning and head out to sea to collect the nets we cast the previous day. We have observed that the vitamin content of the shrimps in Iskenderun Bay is higher.”

Speaking about their livelihood, Taze emphasized the deliciousness and quality of the shrimps from Iskenderun Bay, known to grow up to impressive sizes of 250-270 grams. He also mentioned that they work collaboratively as a family to catch between 600 and 700 kilograms of shrimp per fisherman during the season. Jumbo shrimp is priced at 700 TL per kilogram, making it a sought-after delicacy.

With the fishing season in full swing, the Taze family continues to provide fresh and high-quality shrimps to consumers, contributing to the local economy and delighting seafood enthusiasts with their catch.
