The Vital Role of Weekend Schools for Maintaining Hungarian Identity Abroad

Hungarian Weekend Schools: Preserving Identity and Community
Weekend schools play a crucial role in Hungarian communities, serving as pillars that integrate parents and children alike. János Árpád Potápi, Secretary of State for National Policy of the Prime Minister’s Office, highlighted the importance of these schools in maintaining children’s identity. The government provides professional assistance and grants to support this goal, essential for the survival of associations or weekend schools, especially in regions with limited attendance.
Mr. Potápi emphasized the government’s commitment to assisting Hungarian students from the diaspora, extending support to neighboring countries like Austria and Germany to help students pass Hungarian graduation exams. The recent success of the HUF 500M (EUR 1.2M) tender for organizing events for weekend schools was noted, with an overwhelming response of nearly HUF 1B (EUR 2.5M) in applications.
The government remains dedicated to supporting all schools, associations, and communities, providing assistance for priority events and organizing professional meetings globally. The Sándor Kőrösi Csoma program, which has been aiding weekend schools since 2013, offers scholarship holders opportunities to participate in summer camps and open universities, interacting with public figures and politicians.
The Rákóczi Association’s diaspora program offers ten terms throughout the year for Hungarian youth and educators, supported by the government. At the seventh Hungarian Weekend Schools Meeting, approximately 260 educational institutions worldwide, including new schools in Singapore, Tokyo, and Sofia, were represented.
These schools play a vital role in teaching Hungarian language, spelling, history, and cultural heritage, as well as preserving traditions through ethnographic events and holiday celebrations. The significant turnout at the Hungarian Weekend Schools Meeting in Budapest, with attendees from various locations, showcases the global reach and impact of these educational initiatives.
In conclusion, the government’s support for weekend schools underscores its commitment to preserving Hungarian identity and fostering a sense of community among Hungarian diaspora worldwide. The success of these educational initiatives highlights the importance of maintaining cultural heritage and traditions for future generations.
