Third Dose of Vaccine Reduces Foot and Mouth Disease Cases

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı is leading the charge in the fight against foot and mouth disease, a highly contagious illness that affects animals like cattle, buffalos, sheep, goats, and deer. In a recent statement, Yumaklı highlighted the importance of vaccination efforts to prevent the spread of the disease and protect international trade in live animals and animal products.

Yumaklı revealed that vaccination efforts have been ramped up this year, with an increase in the number of vaccinations to three doses. The first dose was administered between January 29 and March 31 as part of the dominant vaccination program. During this period, over 14 million cattle were vaccinated, representing 87% of the cattle population. The result of these efforts has been a significant decrease in the number of disease outbreaks compared to previous years.

Looking ahead, Yumaklı announced plans to vaccinate an additional 9 million cattle for the spring season and 15 million more cattle for the autumn season by the end of the year. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is also working to produce 25-30 million doses of foot and mouth vaccine at the Foot and Mouth Institute to further protect animal health.

In preparation for the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday, precautions have been taken to ensure the safety and health of animals. Thanks to these proactive measures and ongoing vaccination efforts, the Ministry is optimistic about containing the spread of foot and mouth disease and preserving the livelihoods of farmers and the integrity of international trade.
