Three Centuries of Abuse Uncovered at Water Seller’s Shop

ISTANBUL Milliyet – The verdict has been handed down in a disturbing case involving abusive waterman Metin Şenay, who for years abused children under the age of 12 in a soundproofed room at the back of his water seller’s shop in Bağcılar, Istanbul. This horrific crime involved recording the abuse on video and storing the images on his computer.

During the hearing at Bakırköy 24th High Criminal Court, where the victim’s relatives and lawyers were present, the defendant Metin Şenay, who was detained, participated in the hearing through the Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS). In his final statement to the court, Şenay admitted to the crime he committed against the victim child, whom he had kidnapped in front of a school, taking full responsibility for his actions. He emphasized that the victim and the victim’s family bore no fault or responsibility for the heinous act.

After careful consideration, the court found Metin Şenay guilty of “qualified sexual abuse against a child under the age of 12”, “depriving the child of his/her freedom for sexual purposes by using force, threats, and trickery”, and “using children in the production of obscene publications”. As a result, he has been sentenced to 293 years and 6 months in prison, and has been fined 1 million 687 thousand 500 Turkish Lira.

This verdict serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the most vulnerable members of our society and holding perpetrators of such despicable crimes accountable for their actions. Justice has been served in this case, but the scars left on the victims will undoubtedly remain. May this verdict bring some sense of closure and healing to all those affected by this horrific tragedy.
