Strengthening Ties: Turkey and Costa Rica Collaborate on Emergency Response Initiatives
In recent years, the relationship between Turkey and Costa Rica has deepened, particularly in the domain of emergency response and disaster management. A significant project has been launched with the Costa Rican National Emergency and Risk Prevention Response Agency (CNE) aimed at enhancing the nation’s preparedness for natural disasters.
The project was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by key figures, including Costa Rica’s Foreign Affairs Ambassador Lydia Peralta Cordero, CNE President Alejandro José Picado Adarte, and National Planning and Economic Policy General Manager Oscar Méndez. Turkish officials present included Naciye Gökçen Kaya, the Grandelist of the Republic of Turkey, and TİKA Mekçen Coordinator Fatih Abdi Çetin. The event, hosted by the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marked a pivotal moment in strengthening the technological capabilities of the CNE for national disaster management programs.
During the ceremony, CNE President Picado expressed gratitude for the technological equipment provided by TİKA, including communication devices, drones, and cameras, which are critical for monitoring natural disasters and responding to emergencies, particularly in areas prone to active volcanoes. He emphasized the importance of these tools in saving lives and enhancing emergency intervention.
Foreign Minister Peralta conveyed her satisfaction with Turkey’s ongoing cooperation, highlighting the positive impact of their partnership in recent years.
TİKA’s Initiatives: More Than Just Donations
In addition to the emergency assistance project, TİKA has initiated programs aimed at fostering education in Costa Rica. As part of the Presidential Fairy Houses Program, set to take place in May 2025, TİKA will establish libraries in public schools throughout the country. The project promotion event will feature the participation of HE Signe Zeikate, the First Lady of Costa Rica, alongside Ambassador Peralta and Education Minister Asst. Guiselle Alpizar.
"This project is much more than a donation. It symbolizes a gesture of friendship and represents a genuine alliance between our countries and their institutions," emphasized the representatives of TİKA.
