Tisza: EP supports EDIP as part of defense union efforts

MEPS of Hungary’s opposition Tisza Party have hailed Thursday’s adoption of a position on the European Defence Industry Programme as a significant stride towards a European Defence Union. The adoption of this position paves the way for discussions between the European Parliament and the European Council, with the potential to set up a pool of 1.5 billion euros to support the common development of the EU’s defence industry.
The EDIP, according to Tisza, is aimed at reducing the EU’s reliance on third countries, fostering internal cooperation, and enhancing the integration of the defence industry within Europe. The MEPs of Tisza have expressed their commitment to ensuring that the EDIP leads to tangible progress in establishing a unified European defence system, offering new opportunities for the Hungarian industry.
MEP Eszter Lakos emphasized the need for Europe to not just increase spending on defence, but to spend it wisely and in a coordinated manner. The current global security climate, marked by Russia’s aggression, underscores the importance of effective defense cooperation within Europe.
The statement highlighted the significance of EDIP for countries like Hungary, which may lack the resources to develop advanced defence systems independently. The program could provide opportunities for smaller states to integrate into the defense supply chain, acquire know-how, and create quality jobs.
While EDIP may not solve all challenges on its own, it is seen as a crucial step towards establishing a common European defense architecture. The Tisza Party remains dedicated to pushing for EDIP’s successful implementation to strengthen European defense capabilities.
Additionally, the Tisza Party called attention to the Hungarian government’s continued support for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in the current geopolitical landscape.
