Tokayev Commends Kazakh Peacekeepers Back from UN Mission in Golan Heights
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Astana praised Kazakhstan’s first peacekeeping contingent for their successful mission in the Golan Heights during a meeting with officers and soldiers of the National Peacekeeping Forces on April 14. The contingent, which completed a year-long mission under the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), received high commendation for their efforts.
The team of 139 personnel carried out patrols, humanitarian operations, and provided cargo escort services in their area of responsibility. They conducted four evacuations and disposed of over 400 unexploded explosive devices. Additionally, at Camp Faouar in Damascus, the Kazakh peacekeepers completed more than 600 assigned tasks.
The UNDOF leadership and the UN Secretariat praised the contingent for their dedication and successful completion of tasks. Among the personnel were seven women who bravely served alongside their male counterparts in challenging conditions. The Ministry recently deployed a second peacekeeping contingent to the Golan Heights following the success of the first mission.
President Tokayev emphasized the importance of peacekeeping forces in a world filled with conflicts. He expressed Kazakhstan’s commitment to global stability and support for peace initiatives. Since 2014, Kazakhstan’s armed forces have been actively participating in UN peacekeeping missions, with around 700 personnel involved in specialized assignments.
Kazakhstan currently has 158 peacekeepers serving in Africa and the Middle East, with plans to participate in more UN missions to promote peace and harmony globally. President Tokayev honored members of the Golan Heights contingent with state awards for their exemplary service, courage, and dedication to the mission. Kazakhstan has now joined the ranks of states with a full-fledged peacekeeping contingent, showcasing the country’s extensive experience in this area and commitment to international peacekeeping efforts.
