Tokayev Emphasizes Nauryz Festival, Abai’s Legacy, and Cultural Revival

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized the cultural importance of the Nauryz celebration, the promotion of national clothing, and the development of the Abai Institute during his speech at the National Kurultai on March 14 in Burabai.

The Nauryz celebration, which now spans ten days and began on March 14 with the Amal holiday, has been well-received by the public. Each day of the celebration focuses on a specific theme, with the Day of National Clothing garnering widespread interest in traditional attire. This has led to an increase in demand for national clothing, resulting in the opening of sewing workshops, the emergence of new brands and stores, and a boost in the revival of Kazakh heritage.

President Tokayev emphasized the cultural significance of wearing national clothing, stating that it clearly emphasizes ethnic identity and should be popularized in every possible way.

Additionally, Tokayev highlighted the 180th anniversary of the great Kazakh philosopher, Abai. Reflecting on the 175th anniversary of Abai’s birth, the President recalled his proposal to establish the Abai Institute, which is now being realized through a digital platform aimed at promoting the Kazakh language globally. He expressed hope for the institute to evolve into a network of cultural and educational institutions similar to the Confucius, Goethe, and Cervantes Institutes.

Addressing the challenges of modern times, President Tokayev stressed the importance of adapting Kazakhstan’s cultural heritage to modern realities, particularly in the context of artificial intelligence (AI). He noted the government’s initiative to digitize vast amounts of cultural and historical data to create a national digital archive accessible to AI developers.

In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the decision to move the capital to Kyzylorda, President Tokayev proposed holding the next meeting of the National Kurultai in Kyzylorda. He also emphasized the value of humility and equality among nations, concluding with a call for a broader civilizational perspective on history to advance Kazakhstan’s development.
