Tokyo Film Festival Honors Director Béla Tarr with Lifetime Achievement Award
Renowned filmmaker Béla Tarr is set to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming 37th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), scheduled to open on October 28. This honor comes as a recognition of Tarr’s outstanding contributions to the world of cinema throughout his illustrious career.
The Hungarian director, known for his unique cinematic style, gained international acclaim for his 438-minute film “Satan’s Tango” in 1994, which was lauded at the Berlinale. Tarr’s works, such as “Werckmeister Harmonies” and “The Turin Horse,” have also garnered critical acclaim and various awards at prestigious film festivals.
Having been honored with the Honorary Award of the Academy President and Board at the European Film Awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cairo Film Festival in 2022, Tarr has made significant contributions to the film industry. Following his film “The Turin Horse,” he retired from filmmaking and has since devoted his time to educating aspiring filmmakers through master classes and founding a film school in Sarajevo.
At the upcoming TIFF, the festival will screen short films created under Tarr’s guidance during a master class in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Additionally, there will be a special talk with the Hungarian director, culminating in the presentation of the TIFF Lifetime Achievement Award on November 1.
Ichiyama Shozo, the TIFF Programming Director, commended Tarr’s career, highlighting the groundbreaking screening of “Satan’s Tango” at the 1995 Tokyo International Film Festival, which left a lasting impact on film history. The festival aims to honor Tarr for his unique cinematic vision and significant influence on world cinema.
The Tokyo International Film Festival is set to take place from October 28 to November 6 in the Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza area of Tokyo. This event promises to celebrate the exceptional career of Béla Tarr and his lasting legacy in the world of filmmaking.
