Top Democratic Senators demand explanation for removal of Minister Rogán’s name from US sanctions list
Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Elizabeth Warren are demanding answers regarding the removal of Hungarian Minister Antal Rogán from the US Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List. The Senators believe that the move was unlawful and are calling on Secretary Rubio to provide proper justification for the decision.
Minister Rogán, known for his role in government communication and intelligence services in Hungary, was added to the SDN list during the last days of the Biden administration for his involvement in controlling strategic sectors of the Hungarian economy. Despite speculation that he would be quickly removed from the list after Trump’s victory, it took months for his name to be removed.
While Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán praised Rogán and stated that the Americans did not require anything in return for his removal from the list, Senators Shaheen and Warren are not satisfied with the explanation provided. They believe that Secretary Rubio violated the Magnitsky Act by not providing adequate reasons for the delisting and consider the action to be illegal until proper justification is given.
Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi pointed out that the US did not confirm or deny Rogán’s corruption, but simply stated that his presence on the list no longer aligned with US interests. Panyi suggested that the scandal surrounding Rogán’s sanctions may not be over and could still be a topic of discussion.
The Senators are calling for transparency and accountability in this matter, emphasizing the importance of following established guidelines and laws. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Secretary Rubio will address the concerns raised by Shaheen, Warren, and other critics of Rogán’s removal from the SDN list.
