Tour of New Constitution in Parliament: Numan Kurtulmuş Visits DEM, Saadet, and İYİ Party

Negotiations for a New Constitution Begin in Turkey

The first negotiations for a new and civilian constitution in Turkey have officially begun, with the visit of the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Numan Kurtulmuş, to the CHP group. The aim of these negotiations is to establish a new constitution that all political parties can agree on.

During his visit, Kurtulmuş met with CHP Chairman Özgür Özel to discuss the new constitution studies. Kurtulmuş emphasized the need for a joint negotiation process to determine the path forward. He also expressed his desire to gather opinions from all political parties with a group by the end of May.

“Our wish is to put forward the constitutional work that political parties can agree on in the Turkish Grand National Assembly and to have it accepted in the Parliament,” Kurtulmuş stated.

The negotiations will continue with visits to other political parties, including the DEM Party, Happiness Party, AK Party, and MHP. Kurtulmuş highlighted the importance of approaching the issue without prejudice and seeking the opinions of all political parties in the process.

The DEM Party Co-Chairman, Tülay Hatimoğulları, emphasized the need for a democratic constitution-making process and expressed concerns about potential difficulties in reaching a consensus.

Similarly, Saadet Party Group Deputy Chairman Bülent Kaya stressed the importance of building a healthy basis for discussions rather than focusing only on problems.

Overall, the goal of the negotiations is to create a new constitution or implement a comprehensive constitutional amendment that reflects the needs and priorities of the Turkish nation. The process is expected to continue throughout the year, with discussions on the content of the new constitution beginning around October.
