Woman’s Death in Apartment Fire Turns Out to be a Homicide
A tragic incident in the V. district of Budapest took a shocking turn when the Budapest Police Headquarters announced at a press conference that the death of a woman in an apartment fire was not accidental, as initially suspected. The police had previously claimed that the fire was caused by smoking in bed, but new evidence suggests foul play.
The case began on 29 January when a report of a fire in an apartment on Béla Stollár Street was received. Firefighters arrived on the scene quickly and found the charred body of a woman in the living room. The woman’s ex-husband, who had gone to the apartment to check on her and their children, was the one who made the call. He claimed to have found smoke coming from under the door and immediately contacted the authorities.
Police initially believed that the fire was accidental, caused by smoking in bed. However, further investigation revealed inconsistencies in the ex-husband’s account. CCTV footage from the building showed that he had left the apartment with their children in the morning, but had returned disguised with a helmet and gloves. A forensic autopsy on 3 February found signs of assault on the woman’s body.
The Budapest Police opened an investigation into the ex-husband on suspicion of manslaughter. He was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Centre’s operational unit and taken into custody. The suspect denied any involvement in the crime.
