Tragic Death of 5-Year-Old Deniz Sönmez After Dental Procedure
In a heart-wrenching incident that occurred in November 2023, a young child named Deniz Sönmez lost her life after undergoing a dental procedure at a private clinic in the Hürriyet Neighborhood of the Osmangazi district. Deniz’s parents, Elena and Aydın Sönmez, took their daughter to the clinic due to complaints of a toothache. After an examination, Deniz was diagnosed with cavities in her teeth and was scheduled for treatment on November 10.
During the procedure, which included one tooth extraction and multiple fillings, Deniz experienced complications after the anesthesia wore off. She was discharged from the clinic despite heavy bleeding and prescribed medication. However, Deniz’s condition deteriorated rapidly once she returned home, leading to her being rushed to Dörtçelik Children’s Hospital. Tragically, Deniz Sönmez passed away on November 13 due to multiple organ failure resulting from oxygen deprivation.
Following Deniz’s sudden death, an investigation was launched by the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Provincial Health Directorate. The dental clinic where the procedure took place was sealed for a month by the Provincial Health Directorate, based on the Ministry of Health’s approval. The decision to seal the clinic was made to ensure a thorough and healthy investigation into the incident.
Subsequent to an autopsy conducted at the Bursa Forensic Medicine Institute, it was revealed that Deniz Sönmez had suffered severe internal injuries, including edema and bleeding in multiple areas of her body. The autopsy report was forwarded to the Forensic Medicine Institute’s 8th Forensic Medicine Specialization Board for further examination and analysis.
The grieving parents, Elena and Aydın Sönmez, expressed their profound sorrow and disbelief over the loss of their beloved daughter. They shared their emotional journey of trying to cope with the tragic event, emphasizing the need for justice to be served in the case. The family’s lawyer, Salih Duman, highlighted the legal procedures that are underway to hold accountable those responsible for the medical negligence that led to Deniz’s untimely death.
The Sönmez family continues to seek answers and justice for Deniz, whose life was cut short due to a routine dental procedure gone wrong.
