Tragedy Strikes as 5 People Drown in Alparslan 1 Dam Lake

A fun day by the water turned into a nightmare for 5 individuals who entered the Alparslan 1 Dam Lake in Bostankent village to cool off and disappeared. The incident led to a frantic search and rescue operation involving various emergency response teams.

Upon receiving notification of the missing individuals, AFAD Underwater Search and Rescue, National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE), gendarmerie, police, and fire brigade teams were immediately dispatched to the area. Diving teams scoured the water and sadly discovered the lifeless bodies of Yasin, Edanur, and Rabia Karakay, as well as Eylül Tekin. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the teams persevered in their efforts and eventually located the body of missing Fatma Karakay.

The recovered bodies were taken to Muş State Hospital for autopsy, as authorities worked to determine the cause of this tragic incident.

As officials and rescue teams gathered at the scene, Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Senior Colonel Mehmet Kasım Ermiş, and Deputy Governor Tahir Yılmaz addressed the media. Yılmaz shared that upon their arrival, it was discovered that 3 bodies had already been retrieved from the water, with the 4th and 5th bodies found subsequently. Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, Yılmaz described the situation as heartbreaking and emphasized the support being provided by forensic medicine and the prosecutor’s office.

The community mourns the loss of these individuals and the authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety and the need for caution when engaging in recreational activities near bodies of water.
