Roof Collapse at Sheepfold in Aksaray Leads to Tragic Loss of 50 Sheep
In a devastating incident, the roof of a sheepfold belonging to Sefer Kertel in Yılanlı location of Yeşilova town in Aksaray collapsed due to heavy rain. The collapse resulted in the tragic loss of 50 sheep that were in the pen at the time.
Upon receiving the distressing news, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), gendarmerie, and medical teams were immediately dispatched to the region to provide assistance. AFAD is currently working on the collapsed sheepfold to assess the damage and ensure the safety of the area.
Aksaray Agriculture and Forestry Director Nejdet Demir, who arrived at the scene to inspect the aftermath of the incident, informed reporters that the heavy rainfall in the region over the past two days had contributed to the collapse. Demir stated that there were a total of 900 sheep belonging to 7 producers in the collapsed pen, with 50 of them tragically perishing as a result.
“The roof of the pen could not withstand the weight of the rain and collapsed, leading to this tragic loss of livestock,” Demir explained. He further added that immediate rescue efforts were initiated, resulting in the successful rescue of nearly 80 animals from the pen.
AFAD Provincial Director Kadir Çevik also emphasized the prompt response of the teams to the incident, mentioning that most of the animals were rescued from the rubble. The ongoing rescue efforts involve 2 teams and 8 team members, who are diligently working to remove the collapsed roof and ensure the safety of the area.
Sefer Kertel, one of the affected producers, expressed his sorrow over the incident, attributing the collapse to the relentless rainfall that the region had experienced. The exact extent of the damage and loss will be determined once a thorough assessment is conducted in the morning.
