Tragic Toll: Israeli Attacks in Lebanon Claim Lives of 24 Children, UNICEF Reports

UNICEF Executive Director Calls for Urgent De-escalation in Lebanon and Israel
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Lebanon and Israel, particularly highlighting the devastating impact on children in the region.
In a statement, Russell stated that at least 24 children were tragically killed in southern Lebanon earlier today, emphasizing the need for urgent action to protect civilians, infrastructure, humanitarian workers, and medical personnel. The intensifying violence, she noted, has led to alarming levels of psychological distress among children in both countries, as they face daily bombardment and displacement.
Calling for all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, Russell emphasized the importance of de-escalation to prevent further loss of innocent lives. UNICEF’s urgent plea for peace comes as reports indicate that Israeli attacks on Lebanon have resulted in a significant loss of life.
According to reports, 492 people, including 35 children and 58 women, have died in Israel’s airstrikes on southern cities of Lebanon, as well as the Bekaa and Baalbek regions. The Lebanese Ministry of Health has reported 1,645 injuries from the attacks, prompting a wave of migration from affected areas to safer regions.
In response to the crisis, the Lebanese government has suspended education nationwide, while also opening schools in the south to accommodate displaced citizens. The ongoing violence has underscored the urgent need for de-escalation and a renewed commitment to protecting civilian lives in the region.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, UNICEF’s call for urgent de-escalation serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations, especially children, caught in the crossfire of conflict.
